Los Angeles Heat Wave: How To Keep Your Home Cool in the Summer

If you live in Los Angeles, you know it can be difficult to remain comfortable when the temperature begins to climb. Knowing how to cool down a room effectively can make a big difference if you don’t have air conditioning. If you’re looking at Los Angeles homes for sale but currently live in a stuffy apartment, try these four innovative strategies during the next LA heat wave.

Close the Blinds

Blocking out the summer sun can keep your home substantially cooler. Make sure to keep shades, blinds, or curtains drawn during the day when it’s hot outside, especially for windows that face the south and west. Blackout curtains provide additional insulation, making them one of the best ways to cool a room.

Use Fans Wisely

Make sure you aren’t just recirculating the heat with your fans. Try this method, which is one of our favorite tricks to stay cool:

  • Place box fans in the windows facing outward to pull hot air out.
  • Adjust ceiling fan blades to run counter-clockwise, which also moves the heat up and out.
  • Set up a smaller fan pointing toward you. Place a bowl of ice in its wake for a blast of cool air.

Don’t Generate Heat

Save activities that raise the temperature in your home for the evening or skip them entirely. You should avoid taking long, hot showers, running the dryer and preparing meals using the oven or stove. Unplug electronics when not in use; even the smallest devices give off heat when connected to power.

Cool Your Bedding

Place sheets and towels in a plastic bag, then pop them in the freezer a few hours before bedtime to benefit from the chill. You can also try this method used by ancient Egyptians. Soak a towel or blanket in cold water, then wring it out and place it over you when you go to bed. For best results, place dry towels under you to protect the mattress from moisture.
